Hi, I have the same issue as GWolz has I cannot get my copy of Office for Mac 2016 to activate. I also have a truncated product activation key.
Microsoft Office Setup comprises a full set of programs and services such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Access, Microsoft Visio, OneDrive, Skype, etc. Microsoft Office can be bought from either the Microsoft web store or from a retail store. Insert PDF as icon in Word (Office 365 for Mac, 2016) Is this not possible? After Insert>Object, choose From File, click options and select Show As Icon, then select given pdf, no icon appears. Just the actual pdf file. Correct, it is not possible using Mac Office software. I tried to activate by phone but was told that my key would not validate. I spoke to a human but the quality of the line was so bad I couldn't hear very well and at the end of the call I was told to call technical support in the morning because I think that he couldn't validate the key either. I've taken a look in the log GWolz was asked to supply and I've noticed that the log contains an entry 'Product key returned' which doesn't match the product key on my receipt. The entry in the log starts NYY9R and my receipt shows NB4HG. Could this be significant?
Anyway - any help appreciated. I've already un-installed with CleanMyMac, un-installed manually following two different sets of Microsoft instructions and now I'm getting a little fed up. Hi Joe, Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately this is the stand alone version of Office for Mac so a lot of the steps are not applicable. I did try the relevant ones about un-installing / reinstalling etc with no joy. However to keep things interesting the symptoms have now changed:-) When launching an Office application the following message appears eight times if I click Activate Now before the main launch window appears. Guitar pro 5.1 with r for mac.

The launch window has an activate button at the bottom of the left hand column. Clicking the Activate button causes the previous activation dialogue to reappear and the Activate button to disappear.

Memory clean 3 for mac. If I now click create to create a blank document I get (if I counted correctly) twenty-four versions of the activation window, some two at a time, but mainly one after the other, before Excel finally crashes and locks up requiring a forced quit to shut it down.

Have you selected the HDD or the Volume in the left hand column? I suspect the former, so try the latter.
